Field Notes: The Elevation 22L Lightweight Daypack
The daypack that disappears on your back
Why we built the Elevation 22L, a lightweight daypack for everyday hikers, around an old idea: simple, light, and made to last. And why the people who carry it keep telling us the same three things.
Somewhere along the way, daypacks got complicated
Look at most daypacks today and they seem built for an expedition: frames, panels, straps on top of straps. They're heavier than they need to be, bulkier than they need to be, and they look it.
But most of what everyday hikers actually do is simpler. For that, you need a pack that holds what matters, sits close, and gets out of the way.
The idea: retro minimalism
I'll be honest: I wasn't always a big hiker. Walking into a huge outdoor store to pick out a pack felt a bit intimidating. I just wanted something simple I could take to hike Mount Timpanogos with my son.
My sense was that a lot of other hikers felt the same. They weren't training for Everest. They wanted something they could count on (and that looked cool, of course).
So we built the Elevation around one idea: retro minimalism. Keep it simple and light, but don't cut corners on materials. The look borrows from the older hiking packs that lasted for decades: retro colors, clean lines, honest fabric, a few intentional pockets. We designed it right here in the Wasatch Mountains, and tested it here too.
What 500 grams gets you
500 grams total. You'll check twice to make sure it's on your back.
Layers, lunch, a rain shell, and room for a 2–3L hydration reservoir (sold separately).
A phone pocket on the front strap, so your camera is one zip away, plus stretch powernet side and strap pockets.
Water-resistant nylon ripstop body with a burly 420D high-density nylon floor and waterproof zippers.
What people notice first
When our ambassadors started carrying it, the feedback lined up almost word for word: it's light, it has pockets where you want them, and it doesn't feel bulky on your back. Then they mentioned the colors.
“I honestly did not expect to love it so much.”
The “Goldilocks” of backpacks
“I have backpacks that are smaller and larger, but none of them checked off all the boxes for me. The 22L Elevation backpack is visually appealing and the perfect size for daily use, day hikes, and long-distance run/walks. I appreciate the exterior pockets and roomy interior and that it can accommodate a hydration bladder. Most importantly, though, the backpack is very comfortable. I am VERY pleased with this product!”

Questions about the Elevation 22L
How much does the Elevation 22L weigh?
500 grams, about 17 ounces. That's light enough that most people forget it's on their back, but it still carries everything you need for a full day on the trail.
What fits in a 22L daypack?
Plenty for a full day hike: extra layers, lunch and snacks, a rain shell, and a 2–3L hydration reservoir. For more on sizing, see our guide to 22L lightweight hiking backpacks.
Does it work with a hydration bladder?
Yes. It fits a 2–3L hydration reservoir (sold separately), and the stretch side pockets hold a water bottle too.
Is it only for hiking?
No. Customers use it for day hikes, long run/walks, travel and everyday carry. It's small enough for daily use and big enough for a day in the mountains.
What makes it a retro hiking backpack?
The look: retro colors, clean lines and a simple shape borrowed from older hiking packs that lasted for decades. The materials are modern: water-resistant nylon ripstop, a 420D high-density floor and waterproof zippers.
Is it waterproof?
It's water-resistant, with waterproof zippers. It handles a passing shower well, but for heavy rain we'd recommend a pack cover.
